Brings Your Work to Life Sep 23, 2011
By James I use Poser mostly for rendering art assets for casual games. I'm absolutely in awe of this new version of Poser! The new features of this software has helped me to breathe new life into my renders. From my experience, the render engine is typically faster than the prior version which is a great savings for animators. The new weight map joints give your figures an amazingly realistic quality of motion and the Subsurface Scattering nodes make everything seem so alive. And there are many other features and improvements that you just have to see. If you're a Poser user, you really need to upgrade to 2012! If you're new to 3D, Poser is an excellent tool to cut your teeth on.

Great improvements and new features Sep 24, 2011
By esha Poser has been my favourite rendering software for a long time, and this new version is the best Poser ever. Apart from the big new features like weight mapping and advanced material settings like sub-surface scattering, there are so many seemingly "minor" improvements that make working with it a sheer pleasure. New camera controls for checking up details, better menus, faster rendering, additional light options. A lot of thought went into the programming of this software, many little details have been taken care of. This is certainly going to be my favourite Poser version!

Fun and innovative Oct 01, 2011
By Beth I've been using Poser since version one, and find it to be a very fun and innovative software. Poser Pro 2012 just makes it better. Little additions like nested lists and speed improvements are a great convenience, while more advanced features like weight mapping and the dependency editor just increase its capabilities and usefulness.

Awesome! Sep 24, 2011
By Keith M. Patterson I use 3D Studio Max, Zbrush and 3D Coat every day. When Poser came out with weight mapping I had to check it out. Awesome is all I can say. The weight mapping system (actually three different systems to choose from) in Poser 2012 is the most extensive and and feature rich I have ever used. You can mix and match between all rigging options from spheres and capsules, weight mapping (three different types), magnets, and their dependent parameters. And it is all so easy to use. It has weight maps for bulges!
Max is awesome too and the best, anything you want to do in 3D you can do with Max. But it's work. Hard work. Poser 2012 is so friendly it is actually fun to use. The only thing it does not have is a modeler so you have to use premade models (included) or make your own. I can tell you one thing, I will be using Poser 2012 often and will enjoy every minute. Have not found any bugs yet. I imagine there will be a few, every 3D app has them, even Max.
Animation? Animate with ease in Poser 2012, make rendered movies/game cuts directly from Poser. The firefly render engine BTW is a renderman compliant engine, and definitely has pro potential with all the new improvements. Dynamic cloth. Extensive materials editor. You name it. Plus it has this great little community where you can ask questions and pick up any number of things. You can also buy content at these community stores, new figures, clothes, scenery, to much to list.

Really impressive new version, this is the one to use Feb 27, 2012
By Stokie Dave I'm very impressed by this edition of Poser. Frustrated by the changes in DAZ Studio 4, I decided to try out Poser Pro 2012. As someone who used Poser many years ago, the interface feels very familiar and comfortable (although newcomers to the software will take some time to get used to the quirks). One of the advantages of the interface is its tabs can be ripped apart and reconfigured on the screen the way you want it. The Content Management is good, once you run a PNG converter utility to get thumbnails from your old content libraries, and once you boost the thumbnail size. These are changes Poser should have introduced years ago, and they make finding and handling content so much easier. You can also do keyword searches, and make per-project folders of "favorites". The viewport renders in real-time using somewhat jaggy OpenGL (jaggies mostly on characters), although you will wait 20 to 30 seconds to get this view when switching from an outline to a shaded preview. Once you are in the OpenGL view you can move the camera around and the viewport updates instantly in real-time. The OpenGL is of a better quality (shadows-wise) than that in DAZ, but DAZ can do it in real-time without the jaggies. However, for real-time animation work you'll still want iClone 5 - Poser Pro's OpenGL is no substitute for a proper game-engine. Poser loads all your DAZ content, and some old stuff that only works with Poser or that "looks wrong" in DAZ. It also apparently supports DAZ's new Genesis range of characters, although quite how it does this I have yet to investigate. The other useful new thing I noticed was Collada DAE export (it's much like the FBX export from DAZ) which may make getting textured Poser-only content to iClone easier than before. The only thing I missed from DAZ was a Decimator for polygon reduction. You can output to layered PSD Photoshop files, although the handling of shadows is not great. Poser has also learned from iClone's .iProject file format, and introduced a new "scene" file type which bundles all lights, props, characters, best render settings, etc from a vendor, into a handy "one-click-to-load" solution. Documentation and help is excellent, in contrast to DAZ Studio. I found Poser 2012 was fast, but it put a substantial load on my system - this is probably not software that most people will be able to run at the same time as something like Photoshop and all their other everyday software. Background rendering is good though, and you can render while going off and surfing the Web without any system slowdown, which used not to be the case. Overall, this update finally puts Poser back in the game, and about time too. In many ways Poser Pro 2012 is now a significantly better choice for 3D graphics devotees than the more expensive versions of DAZ Studio, especially with Poser's wonderful sketch mode. Let's hope that Smith Micro can knock off the remaining usability rough edges for Poser 2014.
