Simplehomenet EZSrve INSTEON/X10 Home Automation Gateway It is good home automation device to be used with home networking and remote control over internet. The only issue is the firmware which is still a working progress. The existing support package is designed for people has some in-depth computer/tech knowledge. The web page interface for setting up the control is not that user friendly. It requires the user to read the manual first.

High Expectations that were not delivered Apr 26, 2010

The description and relatively high price gave me high expectations for the product. Unfortunately it let me down. First, setting it up is not very intuitive so plan to spend a lot of time understanding the nuances and terminology required to set up any type of sophisticated "scenes" or "Lifestyles". The operating guide is not very good either and comes printed in 4 point font on sheets of plain copy paper, so also plan to reprint your own or read from the pdf on screen. Again the manual is average anyway, so get ready to figure stuff out and log on to the user forum if you want to do anything interesting. All this aside, I could have lived with it because I like to tinker, which is a must if you plan to use this. The big problem is that I can't get it to communicate reliably anywhere in my house. I don't have an issue with other modules and remotes, but I've tried every location and phase, but still have issues. Lastly, I could not get it to work on any port beside 80 for remote access. I think that's a serious security flaw, so I can't leave it connected for remote access.
