INSTEON = Broken by-design Dec 16, 2011
By Jan INSTEON is unfortunately X10 on steroids. Regardless how much modern technology and logic you add to devices that heavilly rely on powerline communication they keep failing randomly due to various forms of powerline noise that is generated by appliances in every household. You might be saying - why my light does not turn on - oh wait a minute my A/C is on. If it's not the A/C - then it could be the microwave perhaps, or your neighbour's electric mower. This is PHASE COUPLER - a patch on top of other patches INSTEON has built-in to their network. If you run Insteon and X10 hybrid network - this might be the only solution as the Insteon wireless bridges don't repeat X10 signals.
There is no logic inside of this PASSIVE phase coupler, the word "smart" is only in its name - it's just a basic serial circuit consisting of a capacitor 1uF and inductor 0.1uH... Don't waste your money and don't pay someone $25 what others sell for $12 or what you can built for $5.
If you don't have two breakers available (or at least place for the two additional breakers) - forget this instantly - you would hardly install this to be compliant with the electrical code.
Also be prepared - this draws ~13W from your pocket 24/7.
So would it fix your problems? Try and see.
If you have a *magic* solution - I'm eager to learn!

Worked as described. Aug 29, 2011
By D. Churco Worked as described. I can now control my insteon devices on the other phase of my house electric. Install required 2 fuses, and electric knowledge, but was not difficult.
Works like a charm Dec 15, 2011

Frequently had a problem with some units working and some not responding. So far, problem solved. Installation is easy if you are comfortable opening your main electrical panel and installing a circuit breaker.
Spent a lot to have someone wire it in... and nothing improved. Nov 07, 2011
By Phil Rubin We had an electrician spend a couple of hours installing a new J Box next to our panel and wire this thing in there. I was hoping that our security system would be able to talk to our various X10 devices throughout the house. It had not been able to get a signal out beyond the office. After installing this device we saw no change in the ability of the signal to get to the rest of the house. We are going to try a Coupler/Repeater next and see if that helps.
