*IF* you use Insteon, you need this Aug 20, 2011
By James C Abel My 4 stars are conditional. IF you use Insteon, you need this item. I'm not recommending Insteon overall, as I've found it to fail more than it should. I recently had to replace several units. If you can use a traditional switch, do it. But if you absolutely need remote control, then Insteon is the best consumer offering I've found.
The hardware is funky, in that it's 2 enclosures. It should all be in one. It seems to be an engineering after-thought to add the filter module.
The software isn't great. It didn't recognize my unit right off. I had to replace the drivers (in a brand new Win 7 system). But eventually it finally detected my unit. Overall the software is klunky but does eventually get the job done. Configuration could be a lot more straightforward.
That being said, once it's working it gives you EXTREMELY VALUABLE diagnostic information. This is the KEY to getting an Insteon system running and keeping it running. AFAIK there is no other way to get clear visibility into the various Insteon units and their connections. So, the reason for my 4 stars is that if you have an Insteon system, this is the only reasonable way to manage it. This is a required part of virtually any Insteon setup.

Good program for controlling INSTEON Jul 26, 2011
By MM Why did I wait so long to get this? Anyone with more than just a couple of Insteon devices will find this to be an indispensable tool to manage linkages and behavior, even if you don't use it for automation. I use a Smartlinc for scheduling and remote control so I don't need to keep a PC going for that, but the Houselinc software is awesome for controlling who is talking to who, device settings, and discovering any obsolete devices or linkages, and for that you don't need to leave it running all the time.
COMPLETE WITH BUGS Oct 09, 2011
By Ercillor A previous reviewer writes: "The software isn't great."
BUT SEE: "OVERTAKE" BELOW.
I regard that as an understatement. When you attempt to initialize a new software package only to discover that an obvious bug prevents this from happening you have to wonder why no'one ever tested the product before it left the store. We're going to try -- one time -- to get Smarthome to fix the problem via their "GoldLine" on Monday. If they can't do it we're returning the product.
OVERTAKE:
Well, we called Smarthome's Goldline and described the problem. After several tries they put in a good 'fix' to their software package and we downloaded it. Everything started to work at once -- the original software version did not like our operating system; Windows 7 -- and we were really pleased to see what 'HOUSELINC II' can do for us. It is truly an important addition to our very large Insteon system... To be fair I've changed its rating to 5 stars.
