This high-tech yet easy to use wall switch takes your home into the future by giving you the ability to remotely control it from a handheld remote, wall keypad, computer or mobile phone. The SwitchLinc installs like a traditional wall switch with the exception of requiring connection to neutral. Most homes have a neutral wire available. It is typically two or more white wires that are capped off in the back of the switch box. Once installed setup is quick and easy using a simple Plug-n-Tap programming. Controllers are sold separately. With high-end quality, at-a-glance LED status and remote controllability, you'll see how easy it is to create your own smart home. INSTEON is a low-cost home control technology that uses both the existing electrical wires in the home and radio-frequency to communicate. I have INSTEON on/off relays and dimmers as well as outletlincs in my home. All seem to work without any issues.

Works very well. My only suggestion for improvement would be to redesign the led's so that light from one segment does not bled into the others as much.

I am very pleased with this product (hence the 5-star review), but you REALLY need to understand how they work before you buy the wrong combination of units for your application. I highly recommend visiting Insteon's forums and reading up a bit before you hit that buy button.

This item is the 2476S - It is not indicated specifically in the description, but this is a "Single-Band" device. The 2477D unit has the ability to communicate through two different means. Via the power lines and via RF frequency. But THIS ITEM, the 2476S, only communicate via the power lines. And the remote switches that control it,(i.e. the 2444A3 and 2444A4) only communicate via RF.

To make these products work, you MUST have a Dual Band unit installed in your house that translates RF signals from the transmitters and sends it to switches like this one and the 2476D via the power line. You can either use a dual band switch like the 2477D, or an access point like the 2443. I had to go on the forums to learn this.

Also, another fun fact for laymen like myself. The 220V power coming into your house is split at your breaker panel into two halves. That's why all your standard outlets are 110V. Your dryer outlet receives power from both halves of the panel, which is why that's a 220V outlet. I mention this because the company that makes this and experienced installers recommend that you have at least one dual band unit on EACH HALF of your 220V system to improve reliability of remote signals. This 2476D unit won't do that for you.

My point is, know what you're buying and do some research to properly map out your circuits and your need for dual band (2477 etc.), single band (2476D, 2476S (this one), etc.), access points (2443, etc.) and RF switches (2444A3, 2444A4, etc.) before you buy to save yourself some confusion and frustration with this product.

End result is great though!

I bought this to connect to my X-10 home system - thought I'd be smart and go with Insteon for forward and backward compatibility. According to Amazon this does both BUT NO!!!! All new versions of this switch are Insteon only. Only rev 5.5 and lower support X-10 and all new shipment are Rev 6.0 or higher. And no returns once installed. But you don't know it can't be programmed until you install it.
