 Easy but not Simple Sep 06, 2011

There are many reasons why you might want software to work with 3D figures. In my case, I was looking for a tool I could use to pose models for drawing/painting where it would not be convenient to higher a live model or where the pose would be too difficult to capture in real life. For that purpose, this tool works well.
I've played around with other 3D software and this software is by far the easiest I've used to pose a model. That is why I said easy in the title. It's not simple because it's not as easy as posing a mannequin for instance. There is still an understanding of how the software works that has to be learned.
I was trying to put the figure into a pose. There are 4 buttons that can be used for pushing/pulling, rotating, twisting and moving in/out. Which you use will depend on which axis (x, y or z) you want to move along. Besides using the mouse to drag, they also provide dials that can be turned with better naming (ie bend, x-translate, etc) that I found more straight-forward. But even here it is not simple in that it also depends on which body part you select. For example, I wanted to lift a models leg so that the knee was bent in the air and the foot was off the ground. Which body part do you select? If I selected the thigh and changed the Y-axis, the entire bone moved out of the hip (this seemed wrong to me as I think the leg should keep its attachment and only move in what the body would allow). If I selected the shin, same type of thing except disconnecting at the knee. But when I selected the foot, now the leg rose into the correct position. What I finally started to understand was that I had to move body parts in steps. I can't drag a hand to its final location (especially if it is diagonal to current). But rotate arm up, pull it sideways, drag it down. Now it is where I wanted.
There was a lot of trial and error on my part to get the model posed. But once learned, I got the idea and it was easier to pose models.
I found animation to be similar. Easy to do once you understand how to work with the software.
Some things I liked:
- Good selection of models and props (for models there are animals, skeletons and aliens besides humans).
- Easy to use controls. Changing my point of view was simple with a trackball like interface. Views that would be almost impossible with a live model were simple to achieve.
- Excellent tutorials if you go online. Out of the box, an intro to using the application (more about understanding the screens than how to pose a model or animate). A short manual is also included. But if you go online, good tutorials exist. Just don't look for Poser Debut. To learn about animation, I read the tutorial for regular Poser. All the controls worked the same.
- Very quick application
Some things I did not like:
- You can't create your own models. Either use what they provide or download other models (at a cost). To build models, you need the full Poser app. Two of the models do support morphing to a degree so you can get some different body shapes, but nowhere near as much as you can do with full model creation.
- Installation time was slow. This had to be the longest install I've encountered for an application.
Should you buy this? If you have a need for a posed 3D model that you can view from any angle, then yes. Do you want to create 3D art, maybe. You can do it, but the number of models, props and scenes are limited. You would need to purchase extra items. Do you want to create a movie, probably not. The software is too limited for that and you would need something more powerful. But you can get a feel for how animation is done so not bad for introductory learning.

I have not tried many 3D art creation software. This was my first. But I understand the concepts and how it works. This software allows you to create 3D pictures and animation using 3D object models.
I started with the installation. Easy and intuitive. No problems on the install.
I ran the program and the first test for any software is how easy is it to start using without reading the manual or tutorials. This software wasn't easy for me to just start playing around like other drawing software.
One of the nice features of this software is the project guide. You select the type of tutorials. I chose "Basics". This tutorial showed me the basics of how to use the menus to import a box, ball and to manipulate the color, angles and their relationships to each other. There is a "Render" mode which shows your creation as it would be seen in finished form. You can manipulate the "camera" to be able to see your creation from all sides.
With software like this, it helps to have a fast computer with a good amount of memory. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with 4 GBs of RAM. I can't tell you what the productivity would be like on a 1 GB or 2 GB system.
As of this writing, I am still learning the system using the guides. The guides have both text and watch a video with audio on the lesson. My 11 year old son started learning it to and found it interesting to use. He also is using the guide to learn it.
The list of objects is impressive. You have different body types, male/female. Facial expressions, hair, props, you can even create a "morph" from one object to another. I haven't tried the "morph" yet. The controls are very easy to use. You can change the distance of the object to your camera, change the size, shape, lighting. There is so much to this software it is really amazing. The instruction manual is rather small. Everything is through the software.
When I was a kid, I was always interested in art and back in the 80's, software like this just didn't exist for the average computer user. So, having software like this now at my fingertips is fantastic.
I recommend this software for anyone wanting to get into 3D art development.

Poser Debut is an easy way to learn how to create in 3D, to learn basic animation and use lighting tools. The software is focused on creating 3D scenes with existing templates. It includes more than 70 characters with a wide variety of clothing, props, cameras, and lights that you can use to create scenes on a virtual stage. It also includes a step-by-step project guide tutorial to give first timers a quick start. To access more advanced features such as cloth and hair tools, users would have to upgrade to Poser 8. There's no way to adjust render settings beyond the auto presets and Poser Debut does not have a material room. This edition is targeted to people who are very new to 3D and want an inexpensive way to learn. It would definitely be a step down for anyone using Poser 6, 7, or 8. It's basically a stripped down version of Poser 8. But being priced under $50, it's a great way to get started. It's a great little software; just know what you're buying.

There's no question that this is an amazing program for working with 3D figures. The quality of the finished product has improved tremendously since I first began using Poser many years ago. But the learning curve has also become steeper, and that could be a problem for a casual user, or someone like me who uses the program to create figures for various 2D art projects.
There's a good deal of scope here for the artist with a large library of figures and props, and good animation, but it's going to take you some serious time to learn it even enough to produce a figure that's posed in a way that works for you. If you're willing to put the time and effort into the program, then I think you'll find it rewarding.

So many good reviews of this product are already listed, but I wanted to just add my two cents worth that I agree that this is a great software to teach newbies the joys of animation, and also is great for people who would like to do some quick and simple projects. I've used Poser 7 from the same company, which has many more features, but it can be a bit time consuming to install, learn and use. This software you can have up and running -- and create your first animations in under an hour. Makes a great gift for beginners as well at a very good price. Definitely the best starter software of this type that I have had a chance to use.
