5X10 AM466 Appliance Module  Aug 20, 2007
By Thoynan Meoboi
These are extremely useful and very reasonably priced modules. I've used them for a wide variety of tasks such as turning lights on/off, starting/stopping small appliances, even controlling large 1200 watt heaters. I have about six of them, and after several years of service, they're all still functioning. I highly recommend these units!

Of course, you need some kind of X10 controller to control them.

Ihave used your modules for years. I have tim candles in all my windows and a remote that when the time comes for them to go on and off that is what they do I would recommend your modules to anybody. They last for years. I even use them for my Christmas lights outside. I am very, very please with them.

4X10 is Flawed but Cheap and Functional  Feb 13, 2011
By B. Williams "NighTalon"
I decided to read the reviews to see whether these units are supposed to make the mechanical "bang" noise when switched on and off. It appears that they are.

I live in a one-bedroom apartment approximately 15 minutes away from campus, and having the ability to switch off the lights from my Android phone and iPhone saves me some time when I head out of the house to class in the morning. (I run a low-power Atom/Ion-based server with X10 Commander, connected to an ActiveHome Pro module) I do enjoy that I can shut off the lights from anywhere to save money on my expensive monthly electric bill (since I live by myself, $50/mo feels unacceptable).

I'm a bit of a nerd, so I try to offset the electricity I use with my home theater (I often forget to shut this off/put it in sleep mode), gaming rig (in standby most of the time), and my appreciation for brightly lit rooms when I'm doing problem sets late at night (low-K compact fluorescents and halogens only).

I've learned that in lamps with shades (even with CFLs), the Socket Rockets work great. The Lamp Module works great with my halogen desklamp. But for the LED strip lighting I put over my sink (no switch, since I use a RadioShack power supply!) I needed the AM466. Ditto for any gooseneck lamps, since the socket rocket makes the bulb protrude too far. If you put many varieties of CFL on the lamp modules, they will flicker and buzz horribly. Dimmable CFLs do NOT work well with the lamp modules, since while dimmed, they introduce line noise which renders them uncontrollable.

As for reliability, one Socket Rocket failed to program/function until I screwed it in very hard, bending the contacts inside the unit into place. I also had an issue with a specific code and a specific AM466 in my house, but I resolved that by numbering it out of sequence, changing it from A9 to A13. I can't figure out what exactly caused that issue. Lastly, the keychain remote has pretty good range, but one of my credit card remotes is basically useless.

The frustrating thing about X10 (since it's not built into appliances) is that if you control a lamp or appliance from X10, you cannot also control it by its built-in switch. Hence the remotes.

That said, I won't consider an alternative, since the prices the competition charge make home automation out of my price range. Also, the ubiquity and old age of X10 means that there are random projects that support it, i.e. Mac and Linux support if that's what floats your boat.

In conclusion, go with X10, but don't expect a flawless experience unless you want to spend more. Shame about the noises when this unit switches on and off.

5X10 AM466 Appliance Module  Jan 24, 2008
By James J. Cameron "Jace"
This is just the item needed to control the christmas lighting outside. With the use of x10 module's we can change the display with out have to go out and move cords or unplug move the cord around and reset the timers. By running a few extra cords then hooking them to X10 you just sit it the comfort of your home and change the display.
