lights me up Jul 30, 2010
By Robert Hurlbert I use them (I bought 2) to control florescent lamps from my bed (I'm disabled). Nothing else will do that at anywhere near the price. Easy to set & then just plug it in.

X10 Module Oct 18, 2011
By TJ I've used X10 modules for years to control all kinds of things in my house. In fact I've never had one go bad even after many years of daily use. The appliance module I recently purchased seems to be working in the same tradition.
Great Product Feb 28, 2012
By Bruce Kellums I have been using X10 controllers for 20+ years we simply wore them out. Since the Government has decided that we must use florescent bulbs I decided to go with AM486 modules since they work with either incandescent or florescent bulbs. They worked great.
2 pin polarized modules Feb 24, 2012
By R. R. Roth Work great like all x-10 products, only complaint I have is that the add does NOT state that these are 2 pin polarized modules rather than the more common 3 pin ones. My fault the X10 catalog number was given and I did not cross reference with the X10 site. I would have preferred the 3 pin modules.

Not the *worst* solution Mar 29, 2012

People looking for home automation solutions could conceivably do worse than X-10. For example, you could set a rock next to a lamp, point a remote at it and click a button, and it would successfully turn the lamp on/off 0% of the time. An X-10 module in the same role will work roughly 10% of the time, making it a better choice for home automation than a rock.
If you're looking something that works with a higher level of reliability, or in a wider variety of settings, you'd be well advised to look elsewhere. I have a total of probably 25 outlets in my whole house. Out of that number, I was able to control a lamp or appliance through precisely 3 of the outlets. I bought two of these modules when I placed my order, and only one of them appeared to work at all. The other one was a dud. In addition, the working module seems to be affected by line noise in my house. I can expect the X10-controlled lamp to turn on by itself within 30 seconds of my furnace starting.
I think X10 hardware is geared toward people who get a small thrill out of being able to turn a lamp (or box fan, or blender) on or off a few times from a remote location. For that, it's fine. I wouldn't expect to rely on it for anything beyond that though.
