Description:

If you know how to send and read RS232-type serial communication with your computer or from any other electronic device, you can develop and market your own software and/or hardware for use with X10-compatible systems without having to develop your own X10 communications hardware or having to go through costly UL approval. This module is optically isolated and UL approved. The timing-critical nature of communication with this device requires low-level hardware programming experience. It may also require dedicated microprocessor time. Thus, it is not recommended for casual programmers. Documentation not included. Request #1136 if instructions are required.

Good, but a note of caution Jul 17, 2011

I had the identical product connected to an Applied Digital Ocelot X10 controller. After many years of continuous service, I began to experience unpredictable behavior of X10 modules. On a hunch, I replaced the product with a new one and the X10 modules began working predictably again. Apparently, the signal strength of this product degrades over time. I mention this, not to sway anyone from buying the product, just to make everyone aware of my experience.

Not a replacement for X10 PC control interfaces Oct 28, 2009

This isn't really a review for how good this item works as much as a statement of what this item is not. The commonly-used description for this item on any site seems to imply that it could be used to connect a computer to your X10 devices via powerline, especially since RS232 is sometimes mentioned. However, this is not a stand-alone PC interface. It is only made to serve as a bridge between a third-party device and the powerline. As far as I can tell there aren't any hardware drivers for this device that will allow it to work with ActiveHome, MisterHouse, etc.
